Collect Prayer

Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care, that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace, they may be defended always by your protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ…

Readings

 Isiah 58:6-10     Psalm 112    1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Matthew 5:13-16

 Jesus said to his disciples:

"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

Readings Next Sunday (6th Sunday in Ordinary Time)

 Sirach 15:15-20     Psalm 119    1 Corinthians 2:6-10   Matthew 5:17-37

“But if salt has lost its taste…how shall its saltiness be restored”?

Pope St. Pius X, “Haerent Animo”, To the Catholic clergy on priestly sanctity

Being the salt of the earth and the light of the world is the warning that Jesus Christ the Lord addresses to all Christians, but especially to his priests who represent him. If the priest does not sanctify himself well, he cannot even guide the souls that the Lord has entrusted to him.

“Anyone who exercises the priestly ministry exercises it not for himself alone, but for others. For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in the things that pertain to God. [Hebr 5:1] Christ himself taught that lesson when he compared the priest to salt and to light, in order to show the nature of the priestly ministry.

The priest then is the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Everyone knows that he fulfills this function chiefly by the teaching of christian truth; and who can be unaware that this ministry of teaching is practically useless if the priest fails to confirm by the example of his life the truths which he teaches”?

We cannot live without the Sunday Eucharist!

It is the faith of the 49 martyrs of Abitene, in present-day Tunisia, who were caught during the persecution of Diocletian (304-305) gathering on the Lord’s Day, in contravention of the emperor’s orders. They courageously faced death, aware that their very Christian identity was at stake. When discovered, they all declared that they could not renounce Sunday worship. For this reason, they were imprisoned and martyred: some were executed, others perhaps died of starvation and torture in captivity.

Martyrs of Abitene, pray for us!

Prayer for Vocations to Consecrated Life

Oh God, who call those you wish to follow your Son, Jesus Christ, in His very way of life and mission, send your Spirit to strengthen those you have consecrated to yourself: nuns, monks, religious men and women, hermits, consecrated virgins, consecrated widows and widowers, members of Societies of Apostolic Life.

We thank you for the precious gift of their lives and their testimony. Grant them faithfulness in their vows, courage to live their vocation with passion. Help them bring the light of your gospel to all, reflect your love, and be clear sign of your Kingdom through their lives and mission.

Send your Holy Spirit to those you call to consecrate their lives to you and those who are discerning this path, so that they may hear your voice clearly and respond with trust and generosity.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
