Collect Prayer
O God, who manifest your almighty power above all by pardoning and showing mercy, bestow, we pray, your grace abundantly upon us and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of Heaven. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ...
Readings
Ezekiel 18:25-28 Psalm 25 Philippians 2:1-11 Matthew 21:28-32
At that time: Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, 'What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, "Son, go and work in the vineyard today." And he answered, "I will not", but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, "I go, sir", but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, 'The first.' Jesus said to them, 'Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterwards change your minds and believe him.'

“Prostitutes and tax collectors go into the kingdom of God before you”
St. Jerome (Commentary on Matthew, Book III, 21)
True obedience is not measured by the readiness of our words, but by the faithfulness of our deeds. It is far better to have initially refused the Father's command and later fulfilled it with remorse, than to make a solemn promise of virtue only to abandon the vineyard altogether. Our faith demands fruit, not merely promises.
Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael
Source: Lives of the Saints, by Alban Butler, Benziger Bros. ed. (1894)
“MI-CA-EL,” or “Who is like to God?” Such was the cry of the great Archangel when he smote the rebel Lucifer in the conflict of the heavenly hosts. From that hour he has been known as the glorious captain of the armies of God, the defender of His Church, and the faithful escort of holy souls. On this venerable Feast, the Church honors him alongside Saints Gabriel and Raphael, the great celestial messengers of the Most High. Whenever any grievous temptation or sorrow oppresses you, invoke these heavenly guides, crying out: Lord, save us, lest we perish!
