Readings
Isaiah 55:6-9 Psalm 145 Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a Matthew 20:1-16
At that time: Jesus told his disciples this parable, "The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard.
After agreeing with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market-place, and to them he said, "You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you." So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, "Why do you stand here idle all day?" They said to him, "Because no one has hired us." He said to them, "You go into the vineyard too."
'And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, "Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first." And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, "These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat." But he replied to one of them, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?" So the last will be first, and the first last.'

St. Gregory the Great, Homilies on the Gospels, n.º 19
In his famous “Homilies on the Gospels”, St. Gregory the Great offers a twofold interpretation: 1. The ages of world history: The master of the house is the Creator who calls workers from the beginning of the world. Dawn represents the period from Adam to Noah; the third hour from Noah to Abraham; the sixth hour from Abraham to Moses; the ninth hour from Moses until the coming of the Lord; and the eleventh hour represents the time of the Gentiles (the pagans), called at the end of time. 2. The stages of human life: Gregory also applies the hours to the phases of an individual's life. Dawn is infancy, the third hour is adolescence, the sixth hour is youth, the ninth hour is maturity, and the eleventh hour is old age. He admonishes the faithful by stating that no one should despair because God calls even at the very last moment of life, but no one should delay their conversion either.
Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Source: Lives of the Saints, by Alban Butler, Benziger Bros. ed. (1894)
When Our Lord walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw St. Matthew, the publican, collecting taxes for the Romans. The Jews resented publicans as traitors to the nation and Pharisees would not sit with them. Jesus said to St. Matthew, "Follow me." St. Matthew arose, left everything and followed Jesus. Recognizing in Jesus the Messiah, St. Matthew made a great feast and invited a number of sinners and tax collectors.

The Pharisees in attendance were scandalized and questioned why Jesus dialogued with sinners. Jesus replied, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners" (Mt 9:12). After the Ascension, St. Matthew remained in Judæa. He wrote his gospel to teach his countrymen that Jesus is the Messiah. He then preached far and wide and is said to have finished his course in Ethiopia, where he was martyred. Obey all inspirations of Our Lord as promptly as St. Matthew, says St. Bridget, who at a single word laid down the heavy burden of the world to put on the light and sweet yoke of Christ (Mt 11:29-30).
