Collect Prayer
O God, protector of those who hope in you, without whom nothing has firm foundation, nothing is holy, bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure... Through our Lord...

At that time: Jesus said to the crowd:
'The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.'
'Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.'

Readings next Sunday (18th Sunday in Ordinary Time)
Isaiah 55: 1-3 Psalm 145 Romans 8: 35, 37-39 Matthew 14: 13-21
Saints of the Week
Fri 31/7 - St. Ignatius of Loyola, Priest
Sat 1/8 - St. Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
St. Ignatius of Loyola: Born in Spain in 1491, Saint Ignatius of Loyola transitioned from a military career to spiritual life following a conversion prompted by a leg injury. He founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in Paris after composing the Spiritual Exercises, dedicating his life to serving the Church despite enduring severe persecution and imprisonment.
‘He sells all that he has and buys that field’
(Catechism n° 1786-1789)
Faced with a moral choice, conscience can make either a right judgement in accordance with reason and the divine law or, on the contrary an erroneous judgement that departs from them. Man is sometimes confronted by situations that make moral judgements less assured and decision difficult. But he must always seriously seek what is right and good and discern the will of God expressed in divine law. To this purpose, man strives to interpret the data of experience signs of the times assisted by the virtue of prudence, by the advice of competent people, and by the help of the Holy Spirit and his gifts.
Some rules apply in every case:
One may never do evil so that good may result from it;
The Golden Rule: "Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them."
Charity always proceeds by way of respect for one's neighbour and his conscience: "Thus sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience... you sin against Christ." Therefore "it is right not to...do anything that makes your brother stumble."
