Collect Prayer

O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray, so that they may return to the right path, give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honor. Through our Lord...

Readings

 Isaiah 55: 10-11   Psalm 65   Romans 8: 18-23   Matthew 13: 1-23

At that time: Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying:

'A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.'

‘A sower went out to sow...’

(Catechism of the Catholic Church 2008, 2009)

The merit of man before God in the Christian life arises from the fact that God has freely chosen to associate man with the work of his grace. The fatherly action of God is first on his own initiative, and then follows man's free acting through his collaboration, so that the merit of good works is to be attributed in the first place to the grace of God, then to the faithful. Man's merit, moreover, itself is due to God, for his good actions proceed in Christ, from the predispositions and assistance given by the Holy Spirit. Filial adoption, in making us partakers by grace in the divine nature, can bestow true merit on us as a result of God's gratuitous justice.

"Grace has gone before us; now we are given what is due.... our merits are God's gifts."

July 16: Our Lady of Mount Carmel

In Kent, at the dawn of the thirteenth century, St. Simon Stock embraced a rigorous hermetical life before joining the newly arrived Carmelite Order, eventually becoming its sixth General. Driven by wide-hearted charity, he instituted the Confraternity of the Scapular, allowing the laity to share in the order's spiritual merits through a symbolic, holy badge. This sacred devotion was embraced by monarchs, saints, and religious orders alike as a pledge of our Lady's motherly protection and a test of fidelity. The benefits of the brown scapular rely strictly on the pious disposition and reverence of the wearer, rather than superstitious trust. Faithful souls are thus exhorted to enroll through a priest, wearing the symbol continually as a vital link to guide them safely to Heaven.
